A short history of the Czech Koruna

The Czech koruna became the currency of the Czech Republic after the peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia in 1993. It initially shared a short-lived monetary union with Slovakia, then separated as the two new states established independent notes and coins. The Czech National Bank managed the exchange rate for years before the koruna began floating in 1997.

The Czech Republic joined the European Union in 2004 but has retained the koruna rather than adopting the euro. It is a highly integrated manufacturing economy, closely tied to Germany and the wider European supply chain. The CNB's inflation-targeting framework and the country's strong industrial base make CZK one of the more liquid Central European currencies.

What moves the CZK exchange rate

Koruna pricing combines domestic monetary policy with the fortunes of German industry and investor appetite for Central Europe.

The Czech Koruna in practice

Prague and other Czech cities are card-friendly, but koruna cash remains useful at markets, small pubs, rural businesses and some ticket machines. The Czech Republic is in the EU but not the euro area. Tourist businesses may quote euros, yet the exchange rate is often better and clearer when paying in CZK. At ATMs, reject dynamic currency conversion and let the card network handle the exchange.

The Czech economy has dense trade and investment links with Germany, Slovakia and the rest of the EU. Companies often invoice in euros while paying Czech wages and suppliers in koruna, so even a modest move can affect margins. Cross-border workers and families should compare both the transfer fee and the CZK rate offered by the provider.

Popular Czech Koruna conversions

EUR/CZK is the key pair for trade, tourism and CNB expectations. USD/CZK reflects the dollar and global risk cycle, while PLN/CZK, HUF/CZK and SKK-related legacy corridors are useful regional references. GBP/CZK serves UK travel, education and business payments.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Czech Republic use the euro?

No. The Czech Republic uses the koruna and has no current adoption date. As an EU member it has a long-term obligation in principle, but entry requires meeting criteria and a domestic policy decision.

Why did the Czech koruna float?

The Czech National Bank ended its exchange-rate commitment in April 2017 after using a weaker koruna to prevent excessively low inflation. Since then CZK has generally been market-determined, with the CNB able to respond to disorderly conditions.

Can I pay with euros in Prague?

Some tourist businesses accept euros, but coverage and rates vary. Paying in koruna by card or with local cash is normally more transparent, especially outside central tourist areas.
