A short history of the Romanian Leu
Romania's leu has roots in the nineteenth-century monetary system and takes its name from the lion. The current leu was introduced in 2005 in a redenomination that removed four zeros: 10,000 old lei became one new leu. Romania joined the European Union in 2007 but has retained RON while its economy and institutions converge with the euro area.
The National Bank of Romania generally manages the leu against a broad set of economic conditions rather than allowing the kind of free fluctuation seen in some neighboring markets. EU trade, foreign investment, migrant remittances and sizeable domestic inflation all matter. Romania has a long-term euro objective, but adoption requires meeting the relevant convergence criteria and making a political decision on timing.
What moves the RON exchange rate
The leu balances a managed exchange-rate approach with a fast-changing economy exposed to European trade, inflation and fiscal policy.
- National Bank policy and inflation: interest rates, liquidity operations and the inflation outlook influence demand for RON
- EU trade and investment: Germany, Italy and other EU partners drive manufacturing, services, supply chains and investment flows
- Fiscal and external balances: public spending, the current-account deficit and energy imports affect confidence and financing needs
- Remittances and regional risk: money sent by Romanians abroad supports foreign-currency supply, while shocks in Central Europe can weaken RON
The Romanian Leu in practice
Cards and contactless payments are common in Romanian cities, while cash in lei remains useful for markets, small villages, tips and some transport. Romania is in the EU but does not use the euro. Tourist businesses may quote euros, yet a card transaction in RON is usually more transparent. At an ATM or terminal, reject dynamic currency conversion unless there is a clear reason to choose it.
Romania has large corridors with Italy, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom because of trade, migration and family transfers. A worker sending money home should compare the RON received after all fees, while an importer should account for euro invoices against leu revenue. Companies often manage this exposure through euro pricing or simple forward contracts.

Frequently asked questions
Will Romania adopt the euro?
Romania has a long-term commitment as an EU member, but it has no fixed adoption date. It must meet economic and legal convergence conditions and decide when joining best suits the country.
What was the 2005 Romanian redenomination?
Romania removed four zeros from the currency: 10,000 old lei became one new leu. It simplified prices and accounting but did not by itself change people's real purchasing power.
Is the Romanian Leu pegged to the euro?
No. RON is not fixed to the euro, although the National Bank of Romania manages volatility and pays close attention to euro-area conditions because Europe dominates Romanian trade.
